The Secret Recipe That Brought a Son Back to His Mother
CHAPTER 4 - WHAT HIS FATHER STOLE
The lock on Richard Whitmore's archive cabinet had been forced open with something narrow and sharp.
Daniel stood over the splintered wood while Mrs. Weller wrung her hands and Clara stayed near the doorway. Dust hung in the stale air. Most files remained untouched. Only one space was empty.
Elena.
Not jewelry. Not deeds. Not bonds.
Her.
"Who has access to this room?" Daniel asked.
"Only you, me, and Mr. Hargrove," Mrs. Weller said.
Thomas Hargrove had been Richard Whitmore's personal secretary for twenty-five years. He had retired to a cottage in town, but retirement did not erase loyalty.
Daniel found him before noon.
Hargrove opened the door already sweating.
"You should have called," he said.
Daniel held up the photograph. "Did my mother die when I was eleven?"
The old man shut his eyes.
That was answer enough.
Inside the cottage, Clara sat stiffly on the edge of a chair while Daniel remained standing. Hargrove looked suddenly much older than his seventy-eight years.
"Your mother didn't die," he said at last. "She tried to leave."
Daniel's chest tightened. "Leave whom?"
"Your father."
The room went still.
Hargrove spoke in bursts, as if each truth scraped him on the way out. Elena had discovered Richard's affairs, his temper, and his debts. She planned to take Daniel and go. Richard threatened that if she shamed him publicly, he would see to it she never saw her son again. There was an accident during one of their arguments. She fell, was injured, and needed a quiet recovery. Richard told the world she had died of fever. He moved her to the gardener's cottage under another name.
Daniel gripped the back of a chair so hard his knuckles blanched. "Why didn't she take me later?"
Tears stood in Hargrove's eyes. "Because by then she was pregnant. Richard said the child would be ruined too if she came forward. He had power, Daniel. And she was frightened."
Clara's voice came out in a whisper. "Pregnant with me?"
Hargrove nodded.
Then he looked directly at Daniel.
"She was your mother's daughter, but not your father's."
Daniel turned to Clara.
Not a stranger.
Not a servant.
His sister.
Hargrove reached into a drawer and pulled out a sealed envelope.
"Elena made me swear to keep this until Richard was dead. I failed her once. I won't fail her twice."
The envelope had Daniel's name on it, written in his mother's hand.
