The Baby Who Stopped Crying in the Maid's Arms
CHAPTER 3 - THE NAME ON THE FILE
They moved to Ethan's study, though "study" felt too small a word for a room lined with dark shelves and family portraits that no longer looked peaceful.
Camila remained standing near the door. She did not trust her legs enough to sit.
Ethan laid Nico in a bassinet beside the desk. The baby had begun to cry again the moment he left Camila's arms. Now he was tired, restless, and unconsoled.
Vanessa stayed by the window, silent for once.
Mrs. Donnelly handed Ethan the file. The paper inside was old enough to have yellowed at the edges, but recently released. A legal stamp from Saint Agnes sat at the top.
Ethan opened it.
His eyes moved quickly at first, then slowed.
Camila watched the color drain from his face.
"What is it?" she asked.
He looked up. "There was an internal review."
Vanessa stepped forward. "Review of what?"
Ethan swallowed. "A neonatal transfer error."
The room changed shape around Camila. She heard the words, but they reached her as if through water.
"No," she said.
Ethan kept reading. "Two infant boys were temporarily placed in the wrong recovery records during an emergency power failure. One was listed as Baby Boy Vale. One was listed as Baby Boy Ruiz."
Camila's hand flew to her mouth.
"No," she said again, louder this time.
Vanessa shook her head. "This is impossible."
But Ethan's voice was flat with disbelief. "The hospital is requesting immediate DNA confirmation because one child was recorded deceased under disputed identification."
Camila grabbed the edge of a chair to steady herself.
She saw, all at once, a dim hospital room. A nurse who would not meet her eyes. The tiny body she had not been allowed to hold for long. The half-moon birthmark she had looked for through tears and never found because the wrist had been wrapped.
Ethan looked at Nico in the bassinet.
Then he looked at Camila.
"If this file is real," he said, "then either your son lived..."
He could not finish.
Camila did it for him.
"...or mine died in that hospital."
Nico let out a sharp cry, as if objecting to the sentence itself.
Ethan closed the file.
"We do the DNA test today."
Vanessa stepped in front of the desk. "And if this destroys Claire's memory?"
Ethan's answer came without hesitation.
"The truth doesn't destroy the dead. It exposes the living."
As he reached for the phone, Mrs. Donnelly spoke again, very softly.
"Sir... the hospital administrator who signed that review resigned last week. He cannot be found."
"The truth doesn't destroy the dead. It exposes the living."
