The Baby Who Stopped Crying in the Maid's Arms
CHAPTER 4 - WHAT THE DEAD NEVER KNEW
The DNA results came the next evening.
No one suggested waiting.
Ethan sat at the dining table with the sealed envelope in front of him, as if opening it required a kind of courage he had never needed in business, in marriage, or even at Claire's graveside. Camila sat across from him, hands clasped so tightly her knuckles had gone white. Nico slept in a cradle nearby.
Vanessa remained by the fireplace, no longer cold, only strained.
Mrs. Donnelly closed the doors and left them alone.
Ethan opened the envelope.
He read in silence first.
Then he passed the paper across the table.
Camila looked down.
Probability of maternity: 99.98%.
The room blurred.
Her breath broke. One hand covered her mouth; the other went to her chest, as if she could hold herself together by force.
Ethan read the second page.
Probability of paternity: 0%.
He sat back very slowly.
Nico stirred in the cradle, and a soft cry escaped him. Camila stood before she realized she had moved. She lifted him, and once again he settled against her burgundy uniform, his small body trusting hers without question.
Ethan watched them with grief so naked it made Vanessa turn away.
"He isn't my biological son," Ethan said.
But after a long moment, he added, "He's still my son."
Camila looked up through tears. That sentence changed everything.
Vanessa finally spoke. "Claire would never have hidden this."
Ethan nodded once. "I know."
They spent the next hour with papers, dates, and records spread over the table. The mistake had happened the night Claire hemorrhaged after delivery. She had died before she could hold the baby for a second time. In the confusion, another family had been sent home with a child wrongly named Vale. Camila had been told her own son had not survived the night.
Then Vanessa found one more note in the file.
A handwritten statement from a retired nurse.
I raised concerns about the identification band, but Dr. Mercer ordered me to remain silent. He said one mother was dead and the other was poor, and no one would fight long enough to matter.
Camila closed her eyes.
Ethan's jaw hardened.
Dr. Mercer was still practicing medicine.
Then Nico woke fully and reached a tiny hand toward Ethan, while still resting in Camila's arms.
"He isn't my biological son. He's still my son."
