The Boy Who Broke the Window to Save Lily

CHAPTER 2 - THE NAME NOBODY EXPECTED

Daniel turned so fast he nearly lost his grip on Lily.

The boy looked at Megan with the kind of fear that came from knowing an adult had just said too much.

"I just saw her," he said quickly. "I saw her in the car."

But Megan wasn't looking at Daniel. She was looking at the boy.

"Noah, I told you to wait by the benches."

Daniel felt the parking lot tilt under him.

"You know him?"

Lily gave a weak, dry sound against his shoulder. Instinct overpowered shock. "Call 911," he barked. "Now."

That moved everyone.

Megan dropped one grocery bag. Apples rolled under the SUV. She grabbed her phone with trembling hands and called for an ambulance while Daniel carried Lily toward a strip of shade near the storefront. A cashier ran out with bottled water and towels. The boy hovered a few steps away, pale and miserable, clutching his own elbows.

Daniel kept hearing the name.

Noah.

Megan knelt across from him as he dampened Lily's neck with a towel. "I can explain."

"Not now."

But his voice broke on the words.

The ambulance arrived in less than six minutes. It felt like an hour. The paramedic took one look at Lily and said heatstroke was likely. Dangerous dehydration. Maybe worse. They loaded her in. Daniel climbed inside.

Megan reached for the door. "I'm coming."

Before Daniel could answer, the boy blurted, "Don't leave me."

Megan closed her eyes.

The paramedic looked between them. "Is he yours too?"

No one spoke for half a second.

Then Megan said, very softly, "Yes."

Daniel stared at her as if he had never seen her before.

The ambulance doors shut with Megan and Lily inside.

Daniel was left in the parking lot with the broken SUV, the spinning red lights reflecting in the shattered glass, and an eight-year-old boy holding a skateboard.

The boy swallowed and said, "I think I'm your wife's son."

"Don't leave me."

Daniel heard himself ask, "What did you just say?"
