The Boy Who Broke the Window to Save Lily

CHAPTER 3 - THE HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM

Noah sat on the edge of a plastic chair in the emergency waiting room, his skateboard resting across his sneakers, while Daniel stood by the vending machines trying not to come apart.

Lily was being treated behind double doors.

Megan had gone in with her.

And Daniel had a child beside him who had saved his daughter's life and then quietly blown a hole through seventeen years of marriage.

Noah kept his eyes down. "She told me not to tell anybody."

Daniel forced air into his lungs. "How old are you?"

"Eight."

The same age as his nephew. Old enough to understand secrets. Too young to carry one like this.

A nurse came out and said Lily was conscious now. Exhausted, confused, but stable. They had gotten to her in time. Daniel sat down so suddenly his knees nearly gave out.

For a moment he could only think of the stuffed rabbit on the gurney beside Lily's face.

Then Megan appeared in the doorway.

Her mascara had run. Her voice was ragged. "Can we talk?"

Daniel looked at Noah first. "Do you want me here?" he asked the boy.

Noah gave a tiny nod.

So Daniel stayed.

Megan sat across from them and twisted her wedding ring until her finger reddened. "I had Noah when I was nineteen," she said. "Before I met you. My mother said I couldn't give him the life he needed. She and my stepfather adopted him. We told everyone he was my little brother."

Daniel felt sick.

"You never told me."

"I tried. Twice. Every time, my mother said if I destroyed the arrangement, she'd cut me off from him completely. When we moved away, I thought I could still be in his life as his sister. Then the lie got bigger every year."

Noah looked up at her then. Hurt. Angry. "I'm not little anymore."

Megan started crying for real.

Daniel wanted to rage, to walk out, to say none of this could be repaired. But one fact stood in the center of everything.

Noah had seen Lily in danger.

Noah had acted.

Daniel asked, "Why was he with you today?"

Megan wiped her face. "My mother had a doctor appointment. I picked Noah up. Lily fell asleep in the car, and I thought I'd only be gone a minute."

Daniel's hands curled.

A minute.

Just then an older woman strode into the waiting room with a rigid back and a handbag tucked under her arm.

She went straight to Megan and said, "Tell them Noah has confused attachments again."

"I think I'm your wife's son."

Noah stood up and said, "No. I'm done lying for you, Grandma."
