That Birthmark Exposed My Husband's Seven-Year Lie

CHAPTER 1 — The Mark in the Rain

"Get out of my way!"

The words left Alexandra's mouth before she saw the little boy fall.

His paper bag split open. Bread rolled across the rain-soaked pavement while two security guards moved toward him.

The boy scrambled to gather the loaves.

"I am sorry."

Alexandra was about to walk away when she noticed the crescent-shaped birthmark on his right arm.

Everything inside her stopped.

Seven years earlier, she had held her newborn son for less than a minute. He had been premature, but alive. A dark crescent mark curved beneath his right shoulder.

The doctor carried him away.

Twenty minutes later, Alexandra was told he had stopped breathing.

She never saw his body.

"Wait!"

The boy flinched as Alexandra approached him.

She knelt, ignoring the rain soaking through her expensive clothes.

"What's your name?"

"Oliver."

"How old are you?"

"Seven tomorrow."

Her breath caught.

"Who are your parents?"

"I don't have any."

Oliver explained that he lived with an elderly woman named Rose. She had raised him since he was a baby, but she was sick now. He collected leftover bread from a bakery each morning.

Alexandra gently touched the mark.

"My son had one exactly like this."

Oliver studied her face.

"Grandma Rose said my real mother died."

A guard handed Alexandra the boy's torn paper bag. Something metallic had fallen from a pocket inside it.

It was a hospital identification bracelet.

The faded label remained readable.

Baby Boy Sinclair.

Alexandra nearly collapsed.

Sinclair was her name.

Her phone rang.

It was her husband, Malcolm.

Alexandra answered without taking her eyes off Oliver.

"Where are you?" Malcolm asked.

"Standing beside our son."

There was a long silence.

Then Malcolm whispered something she never expected.

"Alexandra, do not take that boy home."
