CHAPTER 4 — The House Without Windows

Police traced Diane's car to an abandoned Sinclair family estate outside the city.

Alexandra remembered the house immediately.

Her father had once called it the safest place the family owned.

Its basement had no windows.

Detective Brooks ordered Alexandra to remain outside, but she heard Oliver screaming and ran through the open door.

She found him locked inside the former wine cellar. His wrists were tied, but he was unharmed.

"Mom?"

It was the first time he had called her that.

Alexandra held him against her chest.

"I'm here. No one will take you again."

Malcolm appeared behind them.

He held the final page of Rose's ledger.

"If that boy is legally confirmed as your son before midnight, Diane and I lose everything."

"You let me believe my baby was dead."

"You were going to leave me," Malcolm snapped. "Once you had an heir, I became unnecessary."

Malcolm admitted that Diane arranged the false death while Dr. Webb sedated Oliver. They intended to send the baby overseas, but Rose secretly took him.

For seven years, Malcolm monitored Rose while pretending to mourn beside Alexandra.

Diane entered with Dr. Webb and demanded Oliver's DNA report.

Police surrounded the building before they could escape.

Diane burned the report, believing she had destroyed the only legal proof of Oliver's identity.

But Alexandra had prepared for that.

The laboratory had filed a certified digital copy with the family court.

Oliver was officially recognized thirty minutes before his birthday.

Police arrested Malcolm, Diane and Dr. Webb.

As officers led Malcolm away, he turned toward Alexandra.

"You pushed him into the street before you knew he was rich."

The accusation struck its target.

Oliver had approached her frightened and hungry.

She had treated him as if he were worthless.

Alexandra knelt beside the boy.

"I'm sorry I pushed you."

Oliver opened his arms.

"I forgive you."

Detective Brooks then received a call from the hospital.

Rose had regained consciousness.

However, she had remembered one final detail.

A fourth person had been inside the nursery when Oliver was taken.
