CHAPTER 2 — The Father Who Already Knew

Caroline took Noah to a private medical clinic.

Nicholas refused to leave his side.

When a nurse tried to clean Noah's injured knee, he flinched. Nicholas quietly removed his expensive coat and placed it around his twin's shoulders.

"You can keep it," he said.

"I don't want charity."

"It's not charity. We're the same size."

The DNA results arrived within hours.

Noah and Nicholas were identical twins.

Caroline was their biological mother.

Caroline read the report repeatedly, as if the words might change.

Richard arrived at the clinic with two attorneys.

When he saw Noah, every trace of color disappeared from his face.

"You knew," Caroline said.

Richard closed the door.

"My mother arranged everything."

According to Richard, Margaret Vale believed two heirs would divide the family company and weaken its future. She bribed a doctor to declare the smaller twin dead and arranged a private adoption.

Richard claimed he discovered the truth only three years earlier.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You were finally happy again."

"You watched me mourn my child for eight years."

"I was protecting you."

Noah stepped from behind Nicholas.

"You're lying."

He remembered Richard visiting Ruth's apartment the previous winter. Richard brought money and ordered her to move Noah to another country before his tenth birthday.

Richard denied it.

But Ruth's apartment building had security cameras.

Caroline's lawyer obtained the footage.

Richard appeared outside the door carrying a black envelope.

The recording captured his voice.

"Keep the boy invisible until the trust deadline. After that, he can call himself whatever he wants."

Caroline turned toward her husband.

"What trust?"

Richard refused to answer.

Detective Laura Grant searched the black envelope recovered from Ruth's belongings. Inside were monthly payments from an account controlled by Richard.

There was also a copy of Caroline's late father's will.

The document contained a clause she had never seen.

If both twins reached their tenth birthday, Richard would lose control of the Vale family company.
