CHAPTER 3 — One Son Was More Profitable
Caroline's father never trusted Richard.
His will gave twenty-five percent of Vale Industries to each of Caroline's biological children when they turned ten. Until then, Caroline would control their shares as guardian.
With one son, Richard retained control of the company.
With two, Caroline and the twins would hold a majority.
Noah had not been taken because he was sick.
He had been erased because he was valuable.
Ruth's letter explained everything.
She had been a maternity nurse on the night the twins were born. Margaret ordered her to carry Noah out through the hospital laundry entrance.
Ruth intended to contact the police, but Richard threatened her daughter. She took the baby and raised him herself, using Richard's payments for food and school.
When Ruth became ill, Richard stopped sending money.
Noah lost his home weeks later.
At an emergency board meeting, Caroline presented the DNA results and Ruth's letter.
Richard called the boy an impostor.
"My wife is manipulating a homeless child because she wants control of my company."
Nicholas was standing outside the boardroom.
He heard everything.
Richard found him in the corridor.
"Your mother is confused," he said. "That boy wants what belongs to you."
Nicholas looked through the glass at Noah.
"He doesn't want my things. He wanted food."
"One day you'll understand."
"No. I understand now."
Richard reached for him.
Nicholas pulled away.
"You knew I had a brother."
For the first time, Richard showed no guilt.
"One son was enough."
That evening, Caroline returned to the clinic to bring Noah home.
His room was empty.
The window remained locked, and there were no signs of a struggle.
Security footage showed Noah leaving through the underground garage beside a man wearing a clinic uniform.
The man removed his cap before entering a black car.
It was Richard.
Caroline called him.
"What have you done?"
Richard answered calmly.
"If you want to see the boy again, withdraw his claim to the family trust."
