CHAPTER 4 — The Hearing Victor Could Not Control

Daniel refused private security.

Arthur overruled him.

The following morning, police arrested Victor's security chief near Daniel's apartment. He carried cash, a stolen access card and instructions to destroy Daniel's laboratory files.

Victor still attended the emergency regulatory hearing.

His attorney accused Daniel of concealing his identity to manipulate the inspection process.

Daniel answered calmly.

"My name did not cause those brakes to fail."

Independent engineers presented identical test results. The components fractured under conditions far below the legal safety requirement.

Emily testified next.

Victor stared at her from across the room.

"You are destroying your family's legacy," he said.

"No. I'm ending the lie you built around it."

Maria's recording was played.

Then investigators presented digital logs proving Victor's office copied Emily's signature and placed it on the defective-parts authorization.

Victor stood abruptly.

"I was protecting four hundred employees!"

One of the accident victims attended the hearing in a wheelchair.

Victor could not look at her.

Police entered with an arrest warrant.

Before leaving, Victor turned to Arthur.

"You think your son deserves my daughter because he's wealthy?"

Arthur shook his head.

"My son deserved basic respect when you believed he had nothing."

Victor was arrested for fraud, evidence tampering, assault and knowingly distributing unsafe automotive components.

Emily believed the worst was over.

Then her attorney discovered that Victor had borrowed against a property belonging to her late mother.

It was the childhood home Emily was supposed to inherit.

Victor had used it as collateral for the defective-parts contract.

The bank intended to seize it within ten days.

Arthur offered to pay the debt.

Emily refused.

"I won't replace dependence on my father with dependence on yours."

Daniel smiled despite everything.

He had never been prouder of her.

Emily decided to sell her shares in Hale Automotive and repay the victims.

But that night, an anonymous buyer offered twice their value.

The offer came from a company secretly controlled by Victor from jail.
