The Millionaire's Son Stopped the Trial With One Name
CHAPTER 2 -- What Happened at Harrow Hall
Two years earlier, Thomas had awakened to angry voices outside his bedroom.
His mother, Catherine Harrow, stood on the gallery overlooking the marble entrance hall. Edward faced her, one hand gripping the railing.
"You forged Daniel's signature," Catherine said. "You've stolen millions from Thomas's trust."
After Thomas's father died, Edward had taken control of the family companies until Thomas turned twenty-five.
But Catherine had discovered that the businesses were being emptied.
Thomas watched through the half-open nursery door as Edward stepped closer.
"You should have left the accounts alone."
Catherine tried to move past him.
Edward grabbed her.
Thomas never forgot the silver signet ring on his uncle's hand as he shoved her against the railing.
Catherine fell without screaming.
Clara found Thomas crouched behind a curtain twenty minutes later. He was unable to speak, his body frozen from shock.
Edward told the police Catherine had suffered from depression.
The family doctor supported him.
The newspapers called it suicide.
For months, Thomas said nothing. Edward warned him that Clara would disappear if he told anyone what he had seen.
Then Clara discovered crushed sleeping tablets in Thomas's evening milk.
She secretly took the glass to a pharmacist. The dose could have stopped a child's heart.
That night, Clara carried Thomas from the house and drove toward the police station.
The brakes failed halfway down a steep hill.
Clara pulled Thomas onto her lap, opened the door and jumped seconds before the car crashed through a barrier.
She broke her shoulder saving him.
Edward arrived at the hospital with police officers--and accused her of kidnapping Thomas for ransom.
In court, prosecutors displayed messages demanding money from Edward. Clara insisted she had never sent them.
No one believed a maid over one of Britain's most respected businessmen.
Now, Thomas held up the brass key.
"My mother said it opened the place where she kept the truth."
Clara stared at it through her tears.
She recognized the tiny number engraved along its edge.
It belonged to a private vault beneath Harrow Bank.
But Edward recognized it too.
For the first time, his confidence became fear.
The vault Catherine had hidden from him was still sealed--and its contents could destroy him.
