CHAPTER 5 -- The Woman He Chose as Family
The charges against Clara were dismissed the following morning.
The judge did not merely declare her innocent. He apologized for a justice system that had trusted wealth, reputation and tailored suits more than the evidence of an injured woman.
Edward Harrow was convicted of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, fraud and obstruction of justice.
Dr. Reed lost his medical license and received a prison sentence for falsifying Catherine's records. Edward's security chief admitted planting the ransom messages and removing Clara's phone.
At the sentencing, Edward refused to look at Thomas.
Thomas looked at him once.
Then he turned away.
Six months later, Clara stood inside the gardens of Harrow Hall as workers removed Edward's name from the family foundation.
Thomas approached carrying two cups of hot chocolate.
"Do I have to call you my guardian?"
Clara smiled.
"Only on official forms."
"Can I still call you Clara?"
"You may call me anything you like."
Thomas considered this seriously.
"What did my mother call you?"
"My friend."
He handed her one of the cups.
"Then that's what you are."
Under Catherine's declaration, Clara became Thomas's legal guardian after an extensive court review. She refused control of his fortune, placing every asset under independent professional trustees until he reached adulthood.
She did accept one position.
The Catherine Harrow Foundation was rebuilt to provide lawyers and emergency housing for domestic employees accused by powerful employers.
On its opening day, reporters crowded the steps.
One asked Thomas why he had risked everything by speaking in court.
He looked at Clara.
"Because everyone kept asking whether a maid's word could be trusted."
He took her hand--the same hand that had pulled him from a speeding car.
"They were asking the wrong question."
"What should they have asked?" the reporter said.
Thomas glanced at his mother's photograph above the entrance.
"Who had something to gain by silencing her?"
Clara squeezed his hand.
For years, Edward had treated her uniform as proof that she was powerless.
Instead, it became proof that she had remained beside Thomas when everyone with a title had abandoned him.
Clara entered the courtroom as a servant accused of stealing an heir--and left it as the family he chose.
