One Broken Headlight Brought His Family Back

CHAPTER 1 — The Boy Who Stopped the SUV

The stone shattered the SUV's left headlight.

Adrian Hale's driver slammed on the brakes.

Adrian stepped into the street, furious.

"Hey! What is wrong with you?"

The boy did not run.

He stood in his torn gray shirt, his face bruised and streaked with tears.

"It's all your fault!" he screamed. "You left us! My mom is dying now!"

The accusation stopped Adrian cold.

"Your mother? What's her name?"

The boy pulled a torn photograph from his pocket.

Adrian took it.

His knees nearly gave way.

The photograph showed Adrian seven years earlier, sitting in a hospital room with a newborn baby in his arms. Olivia stood beside him, exhausted but smiling.

Adrian remembered the exact moment.

The baby's name was Ethan.

His son.

Two days after the picture was taken, Adrian flew overseas to save his family's collapsing company. While he was gone, Olivia's car supposedly plunged from a bridge and burned.

Police found her purse and the baby's blanket.

Adrian was told there were no survivors.

He had buried two empty coffins because the bodies were supposedly too badly burned to recover.

Now the boy from the photograph stood in front of him.

"Ethan?"

The child looked frightened.

"How do you know my name?"

Adrian knelt in the road.

"Because I am the man in this picture."

Ethan stared at his face.

Then he struck Adrian's chest with both fists.

"Mom said you didn't want us!"

Adrian did not stop him.

"Where is she?"

Ethan led him to a church shelter on the edge of the city.

Olivia lay in a narrow bed, dangerously pale. An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.

When Adrian entered, her eyes widened.

"No," she whispered. "You cannot be here."

He approached slowly.

"I thought you were dead."

Olivia began to cry.

"I waited seven years for you."

"I buried you. I buried both of you."

Olivia reached beneath her pillow and removed a folder filled with unopened letters.

Every envelope was addressed to Adrian.

Every one had been returned.

Stamped across the front were the same words:

Recipient refuses contact.

Adrian had never seen them.

Then Olivia spoke the name of the person who had returned every letter.

"Your wife, Camille, made sure you never found your son."
