CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Built a Life on Graves

Adrian returned home with Ethan's photograph in his pocket.

Camille was hosting a charity luncheon for grieving mothers.

She stood beneath a chandelier, accepting praise for her compassion.

Adrian walked through the guests and placed the photograph in front of her.

Her smile disappeared.

"Where did you get that?"

"My son gave it to me."

Camille recovered quickly.

"Olivia is manipulating you. She disappeared voluntarily."

Adrian played the recording of her phone call.

Several guests put down their champagne glasses.

Camille's expression hardened.

"You were falling apart. I protected you."

"You declared my son dead."

"You needed someone strong enough to save the company."

A voice answered from the doorway.

"No. You needed everyone to believe your lies."

Miriam Clarke, a sixty-two-year-old retired nurse, entered carrying hospital records.

She had treated Olivia after the crash.

Camille had introduced herself as Olivia's sister and ordered the hospital to conceal the admission from Adrian for "security reasons."

Miriam became suspicious after Camille removed Ethan from the nursery without authorization.

She reported the incident, but the records disappeared.

For seven years, Miriam kept copies.

Camille looked toward the side entrance.

Two investigators blocked her path.

Adrian's mother entered behind them.

Evelyn had brought a metal box recovered from the family archive.

Inside were the original trust documents and copies of every letter Olivia sent.

Camille had hidden them instead of destroying them because she planned to use them if Adrian ever tried to leave her.

One letter contained a photograph of Ethan on his first birthday.

Another showed him taking his first steps.

Adrian sat down.

He had missed every moment.

Camille pointed toward Olivia's letters.

"She could have tried harder."

Evelyn slapped her hand against the table.

"Do not blame a frightened young mother for failing to defeat a system you controlled."

Camille's bank records revealed payments to the investigator who falsely identified Olivia's burned car.

The supposed death certificate had been produced using another woman's medical records.

Police arrested Camille for fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and financial exploitation.

But before officers took her away, she smiled at Adrian.

"You think Olivia will love you again?"

Adrian said nothing.

"You chose me," Camille continued. "Every day for seven years."

The words struck because they contained an ugly truth.

Camille created the lie.

But Adrian had trusted convenience over unanswered questions.

At the hospital, Ethan waited beside his mother's bed.

When Adrian entered, the boy looked up.

"If Mom dies, will you leave me again?"

Adrian knelt before him.

"Never."

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

"You said that when I was a baby."

Adrian looked at the old photograph.

He did not remember saying it.

But Olivia did.

She had written his promise on the back.

Whatever happens, Ethan, your father will always come back for you.
