One Broken Headlight Brought His Family Back

CHAPTER 2 — The Family Declared Dead

Camille had been Adrian's executive assistant when Ethan was born.

She knew his schedule, controlled his calls, and had access to every private document in his office.

While Adrian was overseas, Camille visited Olivia.

She claimed Adrian regretted becoming a father.

She carried forged custody papers and a check.

"She told me to take the money and disappear," Olivia explained. "I refused."

Three nights later, Olivia's car was forced from the road.

A passing truck driver pulled Olivia and baby Ethan out before the vehicle caught fire. Olivia suffered a head injury and remained unconscious for twelve days.

Someone registered her at the hospital under a false surname.

When she woke, her identification, phone, and baby bag were gone.

Camille appeared beside her bed.

She said Adrian knew Olivia had survived but wanted nothing to do with her or Ethan.

"She showed me a document carrying your signature," Olivia said. "It surrendered your parental rights."

Adrian shook his head.

"I never signed anything."

Camille warned Olivia that if she returned, Adrian's attorneys would declare her unstable and take Ethan away.

Alone and injured, Olivia believed her.

She moved between shelters and temporary jobs, raising Ethan without support. Whenever she tried contacting Adrian, her letters were returned.

Three years later, Camille married him.

Adrian had been so destroyed by grief that he never questioned the woman who claimed to have helped arrange Olivia's funeral.

"I thought Camille saved me," he said.

"No," Olivia answered. "She isolated you."

A doctor entered and explained that Olivia needed emergency heart surgery. Years of untreated damage had weakened her heart.

Adrian immediately offered to pay.

Olivia turned away.

"I don't want your money."

"I am not trying to buy forgiveness. I am trying to keep Ethan's mother alive."

At that moment, Adrian's sixty-five-year-old mother, Evelyn, arrived.

She had rushed to the shelter after receiving his call.

When Evelyn saw Ethan, she covered her mouth and sobbed.

The boy had Adrian's eyes and Olivia's smile.

He was also wearing a silver bracelet Evelyn had placed around her newborn grandson's wrist.

She had believed it burned in the crash.

Evelyn embraced Ethan.

"My grandson."

But the reunion was interrupted by Adrian's attorney.

He had examined Ethan's birth trust.

Adrian's late father had left twenty percent of the family company to Adrian's firstborn child.

When Ethan was declared dead, those shares reverted to Adrian.

As Adrian's wife, Camille had gained voting control over them.

Adrian finally understood her motive.

She had not only stolen his family.

She had built her power on Ethan's false death.

Then Olivia's phone rang.

Camille's voice came through the speaker.

"If you want your surgery paid for, sign away Ethan's inheritance."
