CHAPTER 2 — The Sister Who Never Left

Evelyn took Noah to Saint Anne's.

Marcus followed, but Evelyn ordered clinic security to keep him outside.

Clara lay in a small room at the end of the corridor. She was pale, painfully thin, and connected to a heart monitor.

When Evelyn entered, Clara began to cry.

"You came."

Evelyn stood frozen.

For eleven years, she had imagined this reunion.

Sometimes she embraced Clara.

Sometimes she demanded answers.

She never imagined finding her sister sick and frightened while her own husband waited outside.

"Did you have an affair with Marcus?"

Clara closed her eyes.

"Not the way he told you."

When Clara was twenty-four, she worked in Evelyn's company. Marcus was still Evelyn's fiancé.

He showed Clara a forged email claiming Evelyn had ended the engagement after falling in love with someone else.

Marcus said he was heartbroken.

Clara believed him.

Their relationship lasted six weeks.

Then Clara discovered Evelyn and Marcus were still planning their wedding.

She ended the affair immediately and tried to confess.

Before she could reach Evelyn, she learned she was pregnant.

Marcus's mother, Patricia, came to see her.

Patricia promised to tell Evelyn everything if Clara left the city until the baby was born. Instead, Patricia told Evelyn that Clara stole company funds and fled.

She sent Clara a forged letter carrying Evelyn's signature.

It read:

You are dead to me. Never contact my family again.

Clara handed Evelyn the original.

The handwriting resembled hers, but it was not hers.

"I wrote to you for years," Clara said. "Patricia returned everything."

Marcus visited after Noah's birth.

He promised to acknowledge his son.

Instead, he threatened to accuse Clara of theft and take the baby if she returned.

Clara raised Noah alone.

She worked in motels, restaurants, and nursing homes. She moved whenever Marcus's investigators found them.

Six months earlier, Clara developed a serious heart condition.

Noah overheard doctors saying she might not survive without surgery.

That morning, Marcus's investigator appeared outside the clinic.

Clara gave Noah the brooch and told him to find Evelyn.

Evelyn sat beside her sister.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"Marcus had money, lawyers, and your name. I had a baby and an accusation everyone believed."

Evelyn felt the weight of her own failure.

She had believed Marcus and Patricia because their explanation protected her pride.

Believing Clara meant accepting that her fiancé betrayed her.

So she accepted the easier story.

Outside the room, Marcus began shouting.

He claimed Evelyn had kidnapped his biological son.

Then Patricia arrived with an attorney.

Elegant and composed, she walked into the clinic as if she owned it.

"Noah belongs with his father," she announced.

Clara struggled to sit up.

"You ignored him for ten years."

Patricia did not look at her.

She looked at Evelyn.

"You were never able to give Marcus a child. Noah is the only Hart heir."

Evelyn stared at the woman she had called Mother for a decade.

Patricia had not come because she loved Noah.

She wanted control of the family heir.

Then Noah stepped from behind Evelyn.

He held up a small recorder.

"Mom told me to record everything if she came."

Patricia's expression changed.

Noah pressed play.

Her voice filled the corridor.

It was an older recording made shortly after his birth.

"As long as Evelyn believes Clara betrayed her, Marcus gets the company and we keep the child hidden."
