CHAPTER 3 — The Mother-in-Law Behind the Marriage

Evelyn returned to the Hart mansion that evening.

Marcus and Patricia were waiting.

Patricia sat in Evelyn's favorite chair.

Marcus poured himself a drink.

They behaved as though the day had been an inconvenience that could be managed.

Evelyn placed her wedding ring on the table.

Marcus looked at it.

"Don't be dramatic."

"For eleven years, you knew where my sister was."

"Clara made a mistake."

"You made her believe our engagement was over."

"She wanted me."

Patricia interrupted.

"None of this changes the fact that you and Marcus built a respectable marriage."

Evelyn almost laughed.

Respectable.

That word had been used to excuse every cruelty in the house.

Patricia criticized Evelyn's clothes, friendships, career, and inability to become pregnant. Marcus always asked Evelyn to be patient because his mother "only wanted the best."

Now Evelyn understood.

Patricia never wanted a daughter-in-law.

She wanted access to Evelyn's company.

Evelyn's father had left her controlling shares in Hart Properties. Under the marriage agreement, Marcus would gain temporary voting authority if Evelyn became medically or emotionally unable to lead.

For years, Patricia encouraged Marcus to describe Evelyn as anxious and unstable.

They were preparing to remove her.

Clara's return could expose their fraud and destroy the marriage that gave them access to the company.

Evelyn activated the recorder on her phone.

"Did you forge Clara's letter?"

Patricia smiled.

"I protected this family."

"Did you accuse her of theft?"

"The money was returned. No lasting harm was done."

Clara had spent eleven years hiding with a child.

Evelyn had lost her sister.

Noah grew up believing he had to remain invisible.

Patricia still called it protection.

Marcus stepped closer.

"If you divorce me, I will claim you are emotionally unstable and take control of the company."

Evelyn opened the drawing-room doors.

Her attorney and two board members stood in the hallway.

They had heard everything.

Marcus's face went pale.

Evelyn's attorney presented evidence that Marcus had transferred company money into accounts controlled by Patricia. Some payments financed investigators who followed Clara.

Marcus had also used Evelyn's signature to purchase the limousine that brought him to Noah.

Evelyn removed him from every company position.

Patricia stood.

"You cannot remove my son from a company he helped build."

"He did not build it. He married it."

Police entered with warrants related to fraud, forgery, and Clara's false theft accusation.

Marcus attempted to blame his mother.

Patricia blamed Clara.

Neither defended the other for long.

Before officers escorted Marcus away, he turned toward Evelyn.

"You will come back. You have no one else."

Evelyn thought of Clara and Noah.

Then she thought of the years Marcus spent separating her from friends and family until his prediction almost became true.

She looked him directly in the eyes.

"I have the family you stole from me."

The following morning, doctors scheduled Clara's surgery.

But another problem appeared.

Her condition had deteriorated too far.

The surgeon needed a relative with a compatible blood type to remain available for an emergency procedure.

Evelyn volunteered.

The test results arrived an hour later.

She was compatible.

But the doctor looked troubled.

He asked Evelyn and Clara whether they had ever taken a sibling DNA test.

They had not.

The doctor placed the results on the table.

According to the medical records, Evelyn and Clara were not biological sisters.
