He Told the New CEO to Stay Quiet

CHAPTER 1 - The Woman He Expected to Remain Seated
Julian Reed leaned close to his wife as the orchestra softened.
"Just stay quiet and look pretty. That's your only job today."
Elena Torres did not react.
She sat beside him in a simple white dress while executives filled the ballroom around them. Her expression remained calm, but beneath the table, her fingers tightened around a sealed envelope.
Julian adjusted his expensive jacket and looked toward the stage.
For three months, he had told everyone that the board intended to make him chief executive of Torres Global.
He had ordered new business cards.
He had reserved the CEO's office.
He had even promised his mistress a senior position.
Elena knew all of it.
The host approached the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to introduce our new Chief Executive Officer..."
Julian smiled and fastened his jacket button.
He began to stand.
"...Please give a warm welcome to Mrs. Elena Torres!"
Julian froze in a half-standing position.
Applause exploded across the ballroom.
Elena rose gracefully, smoothed her skirt, and walked past him without offering so much as a glance.
His smile disappeared.
At the podium stood Evelyn Grant, the sixty-six-year-old chairwoman of the board. She embraced Elena before handing her the microphone.
Julian slowly sat down.
His mother, Margaret, stared at Elena in disbelief. Vanessa Price, the company's communications director, clutched her champagne glass so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
Vanessa had been sleeping with Julian for almost a year.
She was also wearing the necklace Elena gave Julian for their anniversary.
Elena faced the room.
"My father founded this company with one rule: nobody should become powerful by making someone else invisible."
Julian's face reddened.
Elena continued.
"For the last eighteen months, I have worked with the board to restructure our debt, recover lost contracts, and protect four thousand jobs."
The strategies Julian publicly claimed as his own had come from Elena.
Every report.
Every negotiation.
Every successful decision.
After the speech, Julian cornered her beside the stage.
"You humiliated me."
"No, Julian. I stopped protecting you."
He reached for her arm, but Elena stepped away.
"You cannot do this without me."
She handed him the sealed envelope.
Inside was a formal suspension notice.
"Your company access was revoked at six o'clock."
Julian looked at her.
"Why?"
Elena's eyes hardened.
"Because while you were stealing credit for my work, someone discovered you were also stealing money from my company."
