CHAPTER 3 - The Mother Who Raised the Man He Became
Margaret refused to believe it.
"My son manages my investments."
"He emptied them," Elena replied.
The audit showed that Julian had forged Margaret's signature and used her savings to cover losses from his private investments.
He expected the CEO appointment to give him access to enough company money to replace everything before she noticed.
Margaret sank into a chair.
For years, she had defended Julian.
When he interrupted Elena, Margaret called it leadership.
When he controlled Elena's money, Margaret called it responsibility.
When Elena tried to return to work, Margaret said motherhood and marriage should satisfy her, even though Elena had no children.
Now the son she placed above everyone else had stolen her financial security.
Julian attempted to leave.
Two company security officers were waiting outside.
Elena had not called the police yet. She wanted Margaret to see the documents before Julian had another opportunity to lie.
"This is temporary," Julian insisted. "I was going to repay it."
"With money you planned to steal from me?" Margaret asked.
"You would have benefited when I became CEO."
Margaret stared at him as if she no longer recognized the man she raised.
Vanessa called Julian repeatedly, but he ignored her.
By morning, she had emptied their secret account and booked a flight overseas.
She never reached the airport.
Investigators detained her after the board provided records of the shell company.
Vanessa immediately blamed Julian.
She turned over messages showing that he planned to divorce Elena after the CEO announcement and move Vanessa into Elena's home.
Margaret read those messages.
One included a cruel joke about Elena caring for Margaret after the stroke.
Julian called his wife a free nurse who had finally become useful.
Margaret began crying.
Elena felt no satisfaction.
She had cared for Margaret because she believed family meant showing up during the worst moments. In return, Margaret helped Julian erase her confidence.
"I owe you an apology," Margaret said.
"You owe me more than words."
Margaret nodded.
She agreed to testify about the forged signatures. She also returned jewelry and property Julian purchased for her with company funds.
Julian was arrested for fraud, embezzlement, identity theft, and conspiracy.
Before officers took him away, he looked at Elena.
"Tell them this is a misunderstanding."
Elena removed her wedding ring.
"For six years, I explained your behavior until I could no longer recognize my own life."
She placed the ring on the table.
"I will never explain you again."
Julian's expression changed from arrogance to fear.
He finally understood that Elena was not waiting for him to apologize.
She was finished.
The following morning, Elena entered the CEO's office.
On her desk was a file the auditors found inside Julian's private safe.
It contained a revised will supposedly signed by Elena.
If she died, Julian would receive her controlling shares.
The signature was forged.
Beside the document was an increased life insurance policy.
Julian had not merely planned to divorce Elena - he had prepared to profit if she never lived long enough to expose him.
