CHAPTER 4 - The Divorce That Became a Criminal Trial
Investigators reopened every decision Julian made during Elena's absence.
They discovered that he had repeatedly altered her medication after she developed migraines and exhaustion.
The doses were not lethal, but they caused confusion, weakness, and memory problems.
Julian then used those symptoms to convince the board that Elena was mentally unfit.
The strategy explained why Elena often doubted herself.
She had believed stress was making her ill.
In reality, her husband had been manufacturing evidence against her.
Vanessa admitted she knew about the medication changes. In exchange for a reduced sentence, she testified that Julian wanted Elena declared legally incapable of managing the company.
The forged will and insurance policy made his position worse.
Julian insisted he never intended to kill Elena.
The prosecution argued that he had created several ways to benefit from her illness or death.
Margaret testified against her son.
It was the most painful thing she had ever done.
In court, Julian's attorney suggested that Elena was punishing a husband for an ordinary marital affair.
Elena took the witness stand.
"An affair is a betrayal. What Julian did was a system. He isolated me, stole my work, drugged me, forged my signature, emptied his mother's savings, and planned to take my inheritance."
The courtroom fell silent.
"This is not about a wounded wife seeking revenge. It is about a man who believed marriage gave him ownership of a woman."
Julian was convicted and sentenced to prison. Vanessa also received a sentence for fraud and conspiracy.
Elena's divorce was finalized shortly afterward.
She kept the Torres name because it had always been hers.
Margaret asked whether they could remain family.
Elena did not give her an easy answer.
"You helped him become the man who hurt me."
"I know."
"You watched him silence me because his power made you feel secure."
Margaret lowered her head.
"I know that too."
Elena allowed limited contact, but she established boundaries.
Margaret could not enter her home without permission. She could not excuse Julian's behavior. She could not ask Elena to forgive him.
For the first time, Margaret accepted rules she had not created.
At Torres Global, Elena restored the money Julian stole and canceled the sale of the company's divisions.
She also discovered that dozens of women had left senior positions after being dismissed as difficult, emotional, or ungrateful.
Elena invited them back.
Some refused.
Others returned with conditions.
Elena listened to all of them.
During her first annual shareholder meeting, she announced a leadership program for women rebuilding careers after caregiving, divorce, or financial abuse.
She named Evelyn Grant as its chairwoman.
When applause began, Elena looked toward the audience.
Margaret sat in the final row.
Not as Elena's mother-in-law.
As one of the program's first applicants.
