CHAPTER 3 - The Grandmother Who Called Her a Stranger

Lily was placed under emergency protection while the investigation began.

Amelia wanted to bring her home immediately, but she respected the counselor's warning.

To Lily, Amelia was still a stranger.

A familiar face in an old photograph did not automatically make someone feel like a mother.

Nathan remained nearby but did not pressure the child.

The following morning, Beatrice arrived with an attorney.

She denied every accusation.

"This girl is exploiting a grieving woman," she declared. "Anyone can purchase an old watch."

Lily hid behind Amelia.

Nathan confronted his mother.

"Did my daughter die at Saint Matthew's?"

Beatrice looked directly at him.

"Your child died."

"That wasn't my question."

Police played Nora's recording.

Her voice sounded weak but clear.

You told me Amelia surrendered the baby.

Beatrice answered in the recording.

I chose a family capable of raising her properly. Amelia never needed to know.

In the interview room, Beatrice's face lost its color.

She claimed she only wanted to protect the company.

She argued that Nathan was young, Amelia was unstable after childbirth, and the child would have grown up trapped inside a hostile marriage.

Amelia stood.

"You created the hostility."

Beatrice turned toward Lily.

"I gave you a better mother."

Lily began crying.

"Nora was a good mother. But you didn't give me to her. You sold me."

The room fell silent.

Financial records showed that Beatrice used Lily's supposed death to retain control of the family trust. Over eight years, she transferred millions into companies she privately owned.

She also paid Calvin to monitor Nora and prevent her from contacting Amelia.

Calvin was arrested at a motel while attempting to leave the state. Police found Lily's benefit payments, Nora's missing records, and several messages from Beatrice.

The clinic administrator confessed after investigators confronted him with the forged documents.

A routine legal test and the original hospital records confirmed what the watch had already revealed.

Lily was Amelia and Nathan's daughter.

Nathan looked at the results.

"She stole eight years."

Amelia shook her head.

"Your mother stole her. But we also allowed her to destroy our marriage because neither of us questioned her enough."

Nathan did not defend himself.

He remembered every time Amelia accused Beatrice of interfering.

He always asked Amelia to keep the peace.

Peace had protected the wrong person.

Beatrice was arrested for kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, falsifying records, and stealing from Lily's trust.

As officers led her away, she looked at Nathan.

"Everything I did was for you."

"No," Nathan replied. "Everything you did was so nobody could live without your permission."

That evening, Lily asked Amelia if she had another family.

Amelia explained that she and Nathan were divorced.

"Was it because of me?"

"Never."

Lily looked down.

"If you were my parents, why didn't you find me?"

Amelia's heart broke.

"We thought you were dead."

Lily's expression remained uncertain.

The adults now knew the truth.

But the child had spent eight years living inside its consequences.

Later, the counselor gave Amelia a drawing Lily made at the foster home.

It showed two women holding the child's hands.

One was labeled Nora.

The other had no name.

Amelia had recovered her daughter, but she would never ask Lily to erase the mother who raised her.
