Her Buried Baby Returned Eight Years Later
CHAPTER 4 - Two Mothers in One Child's Heart
Amelia received temporary custody three weeks later.
Lily moved into her home with one small suitcase.
The first nights were difficult.
She hid food beneath her pillow because Calvin had sometimes withheld meals. She slept with the golden watch in her hand and panicked whenever Amelia left the room without explaining where she was going.
Amelia did not force affection.
She created routines.
Breakfast at seven.
A note on the kitchen counter whenever she left.
A small lamp beside Lily's bed.
Nathan visited under the counselor's supervision. He brought no expensive gifts.
Instead, he showed Lily photographs of himself and Amelia before her birth.
He admitted they had once loved each other deeply.
"Do you still love her?" Lily asked.
Nathan answered carefully.
"Part of me always did. But love doesn't automatically repair what people allowed to break."
Amelia appreciated his honesty.
They began family counseling.
Nathan apologized for dismissing Amelia's concerns about Beatrice during their marriage. Amelia admitted that grief made her stop communicating and accept the divorce without investigating the funeral records.
Neither apology changed the past.
But both made the future safer.
Nora's sister gave Amelia a box of Lily's childhood photographs.
There was Lily's first day at school, her first lost tooth, and a birthday cake Nora baked when she could afford no presents.
Amelia cried over every moment she missed.
Then she created a photo album with space for both histories.
The first half was titled Life With Mommy Nora.
The second was titled The Life We Are Building Now.
Lily chose the words herself.
Beatrice's trial attracted national attention. Her attorneys portrayed the crime as a grandmother's misguided attempt to protect her family company.
Nora's recorded testimony destroyed that argument.
Beatrice was convicted and received a lengthy prison sentence. Calvin and the clinic administrator were also convicted.
The court restored Lily's stolen inheritance under an independent trust that neither parent could control alone.
Amelia insisted on that protection.
"My daughter is not money to be fought over again."
Nathan resigned from the Hawthorne board. He helped create an independent audit and repaid company funds connected to his mother's schemes.
Months passed before Lily called Amelia "Mom."
It happened without ceremony.
She woke from a nightmare and cried out.
"Mom!"
Amelia ran into the room.
Lily reached for her, then suddenly looked guilty.
"I used to call Nora that."
"You still can."
"Can I have two mommies?"
Amelia held her carefully.
"You already do."
Lily rested her head against Amelia's chest.
The watch lay open on the bedside table.
Beside the old photograph, Amelia had added a new one.
It showed Lily standing between Amelia and Nathan.
For the first time, the child's past and present existed in the same frame.
Then Nathan called.
Investigators had opened Beatrice's private vault.
Inside was the tiny white coffin Amelia and Nathan believed they buried.
It had never been placed in the cemetery.
Inside the coffin were hundreds of letters Amelia wrote to her dead daughter.
Beatrice had kept every one.
Lily was about to discover that even when Amelia believed her dead, her mother had never stopped speaking to her.
