The Maid Wearing Her Lost Daughter's Necklace
Chapter 3: The Sister Who Had Everything
Isabel stepped toward her father.
"What does that mean?"
Charles said nothing.
Eleanor turned on him.
"Tell them."
He looked at Isabel, then at Sofia.
Finally, he sat down.
Twenty years earlier, the Whitmore family fortune had been placed in a trust. The first daughter would inherit the estate. If twins were born, the fortune would be divided equally.
Charles had debts no one knew about.
He had borrowed money from dangerous people and used family property as security.
If both daughters survived, he would lose control of half the trust immediately.
So he made a choice.
He arranged for the second baby to disappear.
Eleanor slapped him.
The sound echoed through the bedroom.
"You sold our child?"
Charles touched his cheek.
"I saved the family."
"You destroyed it."
Isabel began to cry.
All her life, she had believed she was the only child. The only heir. The center of the Whitmore world.
Now a sister stood in front of her wearing a maid's uniform.
Sofia looked at Charles with quiet horror.
"Did you ever look for me?"
Charles looked away.
That answer hurt more than words.
Eleanor reached for Sofia, but Sofia stepped back.
"I need time."
She left the room.
Isabel followed her into the hallway.
"Sofia, wait."
The maid stopped but did not turn.
Isabel's voice trembled.
"I didn't know."
Sofia looked at her.
"You had everything."
"I know."
"I had nothing."
Isabel lowered her eyes.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Isabel removed her necklace.
She placed it in Sofia's hand.
"This should have been yours too."
Sofia closed her fingers around it.
Before she could respond, a scream came from downstairs.
They ran toward the main hall.
Eleanor stood beside the open front doors.
A black car was disappearing down the drive.
Charles was gone.
On the floor lay a letter.
Eleanor picked it up.
Inside were only two lines.
You found the girl.
Now you will lose both daughters.
