The Maid Wearing Her Lost Daughter's Necklace

Chapter 4: The House of Lies

The estate went into lockdown.

Security searched the grounds. Police were called. Isabel and Sofia were taken to the library, where Eleanor refused to leave them.

Charles had disappeared with money, passports, and several private files.

But one important thing remained.

Sister Maria.

Eleanor found the convent records through an old family account. By morning, they were driving to a small church outside the city.

Sister Maria was now eighty-two.

When she saw Sofia, she began to cry.

"My little emerald," she whispered.

Sofia knelt beside her.

"Who brought me to you?"

The nun looked at Eleanor.

"Your husband."

The answer was expected, but it still hurt.

Sister Maria explained that Charles arrived after midnight carrying a newborn wrapped in a hospital blanket. He said the mother had died and the child had no safe family.

Maria did not believe him.

She kept the necklace and recorded every detail.

Years later, Charles returned and tried to take Sofia away.

Maria refused.

"That is why we moved you from convent to convent," she said. "We were afraid he would silence you."

Eleanor asked, "Why did you never contact me?"

Maria looked ashamed.

"Every letter we sent came back. Later, a man warned us that you knew and wanted nothing to do with the child."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Another lie.

Sister Maria handed Sofia a sealed envelope.

"Your birth certificate. The real one."

It named Eleanor and Charles Whitmore as parents.

Sofia was no longer only a maid with a necklace.

She was legally a Whitmore daughter.

A joint heir.

Isabel took her hand.

"We will fix this."

Before Sofia could answer, Eleanor's phone rang.

Charles's voice came through.

"If Sofia signs away her claim, Isabel comes home safely."

Eleanor froze.

She looked beside her.

The chair where Isabel had been sitting was empty.

Outside, the church door stood open.

Charles had taken her.

And now he wanted Sofia to choose between the sister she had just found and the life that had been stolen from her.
