The Maid Wearing Her Lost Daughter's Necklace
Chapter 5: The Two Emeralds
Charles chose an abandoned family hunting lodge for the exchange.
Eleanor wanted to call the police, but Sofia stopped her.
"If he sees them, he may hurt Isabel."
"You are not going alone."
Sofia looked at her mother.
For the first time, the word felt real.
"Then come with me."
They arrived at sunset.
Charles stood inside the lodge with Isabel tied to a chair. Papers waited on a table.
"Sign them," he ordered.
Sofia read the first page.
It transferred her inheritance, property rights, and family name to Charles.
Isabel shook her head.
"Don't do it."
Charles tightened his grip on her shoulder.
Sofia picked up the pen.
Then she looked at him.
"You sent me away because you thought I would cost you half the fortune."
Charles said nothing.
"You never understood that I would have given it all away for one day with my family."
Eleanor began to cry.
Sofia signed.
Charles grabbed the papers.
But his expression changed.
The signature was not Sofia Whitmore.
It was Maria's Child.
Charles looked up sharply.
The lodge doors opened.
Police entered from both sides.
Isabel had hidden a small tracker inside her necklace before Charles took her. Sofia had known the moment she saw Isabel's pendant on the table.
Charles tried to escape, but officers stopped him.
The evidence found in his files exposed everything: the kidnapping, forged death certificate, stolen trust money, and years of threats.
He was arrested.
Months later, the Whitmore estate changed.
Sofia did not become a servant again.
She also did not become a spoiled heiress.
She used part of her inheritance to support children raised without families. Isabel joined her.
Their relationship was not perfect. They argued. They misunderstood each other. Sometimes Sofia resented the life Isabel had, and Isabel carried guilt for something she had never caused.
But they stayed.
On the first anniversary of their reunion, Eleanor gave them a new jewelry box.
Inside were the two emerald necklaces.
Isabel placed one around Sofia's neck.
Sofia placed the other around Isabel's.
Eleanor looked at her daughters and began to cry.
For twenty years, she had believed one emerald was lost.
Now both had come home.
