One Day I'll Pay You Back

Chapter 1: The Free Ice Cream
"Do you want some ice cream?"
The young vendor smiled as if he had all the time in the world.
The little girl standing in front of his red-and-white ice cream cart lowered her eyes. She was about eight years old, wearing a faded blue bow in her hair and a dress that looked carefully washed but very old.
"I don't have any money," she said.
The vendor looked at her small hands, then at the quiet street behind her. She was alone. Too alone for a child standing in the summer sun.
He scooped a round ball of vanilla ice cream into a cone and handed it to her.
"Take it, little one. It's a gift."
The girl stared at it like he had handed her something impossible.
"Really?"
"Really."
She held the cone carefully with both hands. For a moment, her serious little face softened.
"One day I'll pay you back," she promised.
The vendor laughed gently. "Then I'll wait."
"What is your name?" she asked.
"Daniel."
"I'm Sophie."
Daniel leaned on the cart. "Well, Sophie, enjoy your ice cream before it melts."
She nodded, took one careful bite, and smiled.
That smile stayed with him longer than he expected.
Years passed.
The street changed. Stores closed. New buildings rose. Daniel's dark hair turned gray, then white. His once-bright ice cream cart became old and worn, but he still parked it under the same corner awning every summer.
He remembered many customers.
But he never forgot the girl with the blue bow.
Then one afternoon, decades later, Daniel sat beside his cart with unpaid bills in his pocket and nowhere left to go.
A man in a khaki jacket stopped in front of him.
"How's business lately?"
Daniel looked up with tired eyes.
"I went bankrupt," he said. "I'll end up on the street."
Behind the man, high heels clicked against the pavement.
A woman in a tailored suit stepped into the sunlight.
Daniel slowly lifted his head.
She smiled.
"I told you," she said, "I'll pay you back."
