One Day I'll Pay You Back

Chapter 4: The Man in the Khaki Jacket

Martin returned slowly, his polished shoes silent on the pavement.

"Sophie," he said, "step away from him."

The command was gentle, but Daniel heard the threat beneath it.

Sophie did not move.

"You told me my parents left nothing behind."

Martin looked at the photograph in her hand, and for the first time his mask slipped.

"Old people collect fantasies."

Daniel stood with difficulty. "Not fantasies. Records."

Martin's eyes cut toward him.

"You should have taken the money years ago."

Sophie turned cold.

"What money?"

Daniel opened the back panel of the cart. Inside, hidden behind decades of grease stains and repair wood, was a sealed packet wrapped in plastic.

He placed it in Sophie's hands.

"Your father gave me this before he died."

Martin lunged.

Daniel stepped between them.

For an old man, he moved faster than Sophie expected. Martin stopped just inches away, breathing hard.

"Give me that," Martin said.

Sophie tore open the packet.

Inside were original property deeds, letters from her mother, and a signed statement naming Martin as the man who forged the transfer of the family trust.

There was also a recording device.

Not modern.

Old, small, and carefully preserved.

Daniel pressed play.

Sophie's mother's voice filled the street.

"Martin, please. This land belongs to Sophie. You cannot sell it."

Martin's younger voice replied.

"She is a child. By the time she understands anything, she will thank me for making her rich."

Then came her father's voice.

"No. She will know you stole from her."

The recording ended with a struggle.

Sophie stared at Martin.

"You didn't save my estate," she whispered. "You stole it."

Martin's face twisted.

"I built your life."

"No," Sophie said. "You built a cage."

Martin reached for her arm.

Before he touched her, two black cars stopped at the curb. Men and women in dark suits stepped out.

Sophie had not come alone.

Her legal team had been waiting nearby because she never fully trusted Martin.

Her chief attorney looked at the packet, then at Martin.

"Mr. Vale, I think we should discuss these documents with the police."

Daniel sank back onto the bench, exhausted.

Sophie knelt in front of him.

"You kept this all these years?"

Daniel smiled faintly.

"I told you I would wait."
