One Day I'll Pay You Back

Chapter 2: The Woman Who Remembered

Daniel stared at her as if the years had folded in half.

The woman standing before him was elegant, calm, and successful. Her hair was neatly styled, her suit was expensive, and the people walking behind her seemed to move aside without knowing why.

But her smile was the same.

Soft.

Grateful.

A little serious, like the child who once treated a free cone like a sacred promise.

"Sophie?" Daniel whispered.

She nodded.

"You remembered me."

Daniel gave a weak laugh. "I remembered the little girl. I didn't expect her to return as someone who looks like she owns the whole street."

Sophie's eyes moved to the cart. The paint had peeled. One wheel was crooked. The menu board was stained from years of rain.

Then she looked at the eviction notice clipped beside the handle.

"How much do you owe?"

Daniel quickly covered the paper.

"No. I didn't tell you this for money."

"You said you would end up on the street."

"That was an old man complaining."

Sophie crouched slightly so she could meet his eyes. "When I was hungry, you didn't ask questions. You didn't ask if I deserved it. You just helped me."

Daniel looked away.

"It was one ice cream."

"No," Sophie said quietly. "It was the first kind thing anyone did for me that day."

The man in the khaki jacket cleared his throat.

Sophie turned. "Uncle Martin, wait in the car."

Martin frowned. "Sophie, this is not wise."

Daniel noticed the tension in his voice.

Sophie did too.

"I said wait in the car."

Martin's expression hardened for half a second before he smiled.

"Of course."

After he left, Daniel lowered his voice.

"You shouldn't give an old stranger too much trust."

Sophie looked at him for a long moment.

"You were never a stranger to me."

Then her phone buzzed.

A message appeared on the screen.

Do not buy that cart.

Sophie stared at it.

The sender was Martin.

A second message followed.

You don't know what that old man did to your family.
