Her Father Was Never Told She Could Walk

CHAPTER 1 - The Step Her Father Was Not Meant to See

Daniel Bennett returned from his business trip one day early.

As he crossed the backyard, he heard a boy encouraging someone near the garden fence.

"Come on, one more try! I'm right here with you."

Daniel stopped.

His eight-year-old daughter, Sophie, stood inside a large basin filled with water. Her right leg was covered by a waterproof white cast, and both hands gripped a pair of crutches.

Beside her was Malik Turner, a nine-year-old boy Daniel had seen around the neighborhood.

Malik held the crutches steady.

Sophie looked terrified.

"Don't tell Daddy yet," she whispered. "I want to do it first."

Daniel remained silent.

Four months earlier, Sophie had fallen from a pony. Her doctor said the damaged nerves in her leg might prevent her from walking normally again.

Daniel had spent thousands on specialists, private nurses, and equipment.

Nothing had helped.

Now Sophie slowly raised her injured leg.

Malik leaned closer.

"You can do it."

Sophie moved forward.

Her foot touched the bottom of the basin, sending a small splash over the edge.

"Yes!" Malik cried. "You did it! That was a real step!"

Daniel covered his mouth.

Sophie looked up and saw him.

Her smile disappeared.

"Daddy?"

Daniel rushed forward and lifted her out of the water.

"You could have fallen. Who told you to do this?"

Sophie clung to him.

"Please don't send Malik away."

Malik stepped back.

Daniel recognized the fear in both children's faces.

"Why would I send him away?"

"Because Aunt Helena sent away his grandmother."

Daniel looked at Malik.

"Who is your grandmother?"

"Ruth Turner. She was Sophie's physical therapist."

Daniel remembered the name. His older sister, Helena, claimed Ruth had been dismissed for ignoring medical instructions.

Malik pulled a small notebook from his pocket.

"My grandma said Sophie's bone healed weeks ago. She said someone was keeping the cast on too long."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Sophie touched his face.

"Aunt Helena said I wasn't supposed to walk until after my birthday."

"Why?"

Sophie looked toward the house.

"Because if I get better, she loses the money Mommy left for my care."

Daniel had returned home expecting to surprise his daughter. Instead, he discovered that someone had been paid to keep her injured.
