Her Father Was Never Told She Could Walk
CHAPTER 4 - The Car at the Old Clinic
Police traced Helena's car to an abandoned rehabilitation clinic outside the city.
Malik recognized the building.
Bright Path trucks had been making deliveries there for months.
Daniel wanted to enter immediately, but officers ordered him to remain outside.
Inside the clinic, Helena had placed Sophie in a wheelchair.
She told the girl that Daniel was sending her away because he could no longer care for her.
Sophie did not believe her.
"Daddy cried when the doctor said I could walk."
Helena pushed the wheelchair toward a back exit.
Sophie locked both wheels.
"You always told me I was too weak," she said. "But you were lying."
Helena tried to lift her.
Sophie grabbed the fire alarm and pulled it.
The alarm filled the building.
Police entered seconds later.
Daniel found Sophie sitting on the floor beside the wheelchair. She had lowered herself out of it to prevent Helena from moving her.
He wrapped his arms around her.
"I knew you would come," Sophie said.
Helena, Dr. Mercer, and the private nurse were arrested.
Investigators recovered additional records from the clinic. Helena had taken money from several elderly relatives and disabled family members using the same false care companies.
She was charged with fraud, forgery, kidnapping, child endangerment, and medical abuse. Dr. Mercer lost his medical license and faced criminal charges for falsifying records and prescribing unnecessary medication.
Daniel restored every dollar taken from Sophie's trust.
He also paid Ruth for the work she had lost and offered her the position of supervising Sophie's recovery.
Ruth accepted under one condition.
"You attend every therapy meeting."
Daniel agreed.
Sophie's first official session was held in the backyard.
Malik placed the white basin on the grass again, but this time a licensed therapist stood nearby.
Daniel rolled up his trousers and stepped into the water.
Sophie laughed.
"Your shoes are still on."
"I was in a hurry."
She handed him one of her crutches.
"You don't need this."
Daniel looked at her.
"I think I do."
Sophie took his hand.
She moved one foot forward, then the other.
When her right leg began shaking, she tried to stop.
Daniel remembered what Malik had said.
"Come on, one more try. I'm right here with you."
Sophie lifted her foot again.
This time, she was not trying to surprise her father. She was teaching him how to stay beside her.
