Her Father Was Never Told She Could Walk
CHAPTER 5 - The Long Way Across the Lawn
Helena was convicted the following year.
Several of her victims received their money back after investigators seized her properties and private accounts. Dr. Mercer accepted a prison sentence rather than face a longer trial.
Daniel did not return immediately to his old life.
He appointed a temporary chief executive and began working from home. He attended Sophie's medical appointments, prepared her breakfast, and learned how to help without controlling every movement.
Some days, Sophie made progress.
Other days, her leg hurt and she refused to leave her room.
Daniel stopped telling her to be brave.
Instead, he sat beside her until she was ready.
Malik continued visiting after school. Ruth supervised the children's exercises and made sure Malik understood that friendship did not make him responsible for Sophie's recovery.
"You are allowed to be a child too," she told him.
Daniel created an independent foundation to help families question unnecessary medical treatments. Ruth became one of its advisers, but she refused to let Daniel name the program after her.
"Spend the money on patients, not signs," she said.
Six months after the cast was removed, Sophie walked with one crutch.
Three months later, she began using only a small leg brace.
On her ninth birthday, Daniel organized a picnic in the backyard.
There were no business partners or reporters. Ruth brought sandwiches, Malik brought a football, and Sophie chose a cake covered with yellow flowers.
The white water basin remained beside the garden shed.
Sophie refused to let anyone throw it away.
After lunch, Malik placed the football on the grass.
"Do you think you can reach it?"
Sophie looked at the distance.
It was farther than she usually walked without help.
Daniel started to stand.
Sophie raised one hand.
"Wait. I want to do it first."
Daniel remained in his chair.
Sophie took one step.
Then another.
Halfway across the lawn, her leg trembled.
Malik did not run toward her. He simply stood beside the football and smiled.
Sophie kept going.
When she finally reached him, she placed one foot on top of the ball.
Daniel applauded.
Sophie turned around.
"Don't make a big deal about it, Daddy."
Daniel wiped his eyes.
"I'm not."
"You are crying."
"A little."
Malik gently kicked the ball toward her.
Sophie stopped it with her right foot.
Then she kicked it back.
