The Homeless Man Asked the Heiress to Dance

CHAPTER 1 - The Dance Nobody Expected
Nathan Cole entered the ballroom barefoot.
A plastic bag hung from one hand. His clothes were patched, his face was dirty, and a pale scar crossed his left cheek.
The guests moved away from him.
At the center of the ballroom sat nineteen-year-old Emily Carter. Her white gown covered her legs, and a diamond crown rested above her dark hair.
Her parents had organized the gala to celebrate her birthday and raise money for a rehabilitation charity.
Nathan stopped before her wheelchair.
"May I have this dance?"
Emily's father, Richard, slammed his hand against the table.
"Stay away from my daughter! Do not mock her pain. Leave this hall now!"
Emily lifted one gloved hand.
"Father, please wait. I want to know what he can do."
Nathan had been watching her during the speeches. When Richard struck the table, Emily's right foot had pressed against the floor.
Her legs were not lifeless.
They were weak, frightened, and unused.
Nathan met her eyes.
"I can help you rise from that chair."
Emily's hands trembled.
"Then take my hand. Dance with me."
Nathan took her hand and placed his other arm firmly around her waist.
"Do not pull with your arms," he whispered. "Push your feet into the floor."
Emily leaned forward.
Her knees shook violently. For one terrifying second, she thought she would fall.
Then her legs held.
The wheelchair rolled back several inches.
"I... I am standing."
Her mother, Sarah, covered her mouth.
"She is standing... my child is standing!"
Richard began to cry.
"It is a miracle. Forgive me."
Nathan's expression changed.
"This is not a miracle. She needs a proper examination and months of therapy."
Richard stared at him more closely.
He recognized the scar.
The tears disappeared from his eyes.
"You."
Sarah turned toward her husband.
"You know this man?"
Nathan released Emily only after she was safely seated again.
He faced Richard.
"He should know me. I am his son."
