The Homeless Man Asked the Heiress to Dance
CHAPTER 4 - The Family That Remained
Sarah asked Richard to leave the house.
She did not promise divorce, and she did not offer forgiveness. She told him that any future relationship would require honesty, counseling, and patience.
Richard moved into a hotel room.
Without him controlling every decision, Emily returned to therapy with new determination.
She also asked Nathan to come back.
"I am still angry with you," she said.
"You should be."
"But you admitted what you did. My father never does that until he is trapped."
Nathan returned, but their relationship was no longer built around rescue.
Emily challenged him too.
She helped him apply for work at a community rehabilitation center. Nathan resisted because he was ashamed of his appearance and the years missing from his employment history.
Emily refused to feel sorry for him.
"You keep telling me to show up. Now it is your turn."
Nathan was hired as an assistant while he completed the training needed to renew his certification. He moved from the shelter into a rented room near the center.
Sarah visited him there.
She admitted that Richard's wealth had allowed her to live comfortably while Rose raised Nathan alone.
"I did not know about you," she said. "But I benefited from a lie that hurt you."
Nathan did not know how to answer.
Sarah did not ask him to call her family.
"I cannot replace your mother. I can only stop treating you like a stranger."
Richard began attending counseling. He apologized to Nathan, but Nathan refused to meet him privately.
An apology could begin accountability. It could not restore thirty-two lost years.
Emily also refused to let her father turn her recovery into a story about his redemption.
At her next therapy assessment, she crossed the room using parallel bars.
Richard watched from the doorway.
When she finished, he whispered, "I am proud of you."
Emily sat in her wheelchair and faced him.
"Then be proud without taking credit."
A month later, the rehabilitation center announced a winter dance.
Emily registered herself and Nathan.
He looked alarmed.
"I do not dance."
Emily smiled.
"Neither did I. You asked me anyway."
