The Homeless Man Asked the Heiress to Dance

CHAPTER 3 - What Nathan Really Wanted

Emily began therapy under the supervision of a rehabilitation team.

Nathan did not pretend to be her doctor. He attended sessions when Emily asked and helped her practice the exercises he once taught patients.

Progress was slow.

Some days Emily stood for twenty seconds.

Other days, pain forced her back into the chair before she could straighten her knees.

Nathan never called those days failures.

"You showed up," he told her. "That counts."

They began learning about each other.

Nathan discovered Emily loved old music and hated being treated like a fragile child.

Emily learned Nathan once planned to open a small rehabilitation center with Rose. After her stroke, those plans disappeared.

One afternoon, Emily asked why he had entered the ballroom.

Nathan hesitated.

"I came to confront Richard."

"So the dance was part of your revenge?"

"No. I saw your foot move. But when I walked toward you, part of me wanted him to feel ashamed."

Emily appreciated the honesty.

"You used my birthday to hurt him."

"Yes."

She asked Nathan to leave the session.

For three days, she refused his calls.

Meanwhile, Sarah confronted Richard about their marriage.

He admitted he had chosen her partly because her family owned the hotel. He insisted he eventually loved her.

Sarah did not find that comforting.

"You built our marriage over a woman and child you erased."

Richard blamed his parents, his age, and his fear.

Sarah listened until he ran out of excuses.

Then Emily entered the room.

She had overheard enough.

Her father had also lied about the accident that injured her.

For years, Richard said another driver had caused it.

Emily finally admitted what she remembered.

Richard had been driving too fast after drinking at a business dinner. She begged him to slow down. They argued, and he lost control of the car.

Afterward, Richard discouraged aggressive rehabilitation because every session reminded him of what he had done.

"I wanted to keep you safe," he said.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"No. You wanted me to stay where your guilt could control me."

Sarah removed her wedding ring.

Richard stared at her.

"You did not protect this family," she said. "You made all of us live inside your fear."
