CHAPTER 4 - Two Daughters, One Betrayal

Michael was removed from company leadership.

The decision was not based on his affair alone. The managers no longer trusted his judgment, and he could not explain the work he claimed to have created.

Jessica agreed to lead the company temporarily.

She did not celebrate.

Her marriage had still ended. Eight years of love could not be erased simply because Michael had finally been exposed.

Sarah also lost her position.

Henry refused to protect her from the consequences of helping Michael humiliate Jessica.

"You are still my daughter," he told her. "But being my daughter does not make you entitled to authority."

Sarah blamed Jessica.

"You always had everything."

Jessica finally confronted the resentment between them.

"When your mother died, I gave you half my room."

"You still remained the real daughter."

"I defended you every time someone called you Father's mistake."

Sarah looked away.

Henry admitted his own failure.

He had expected Jessica to work for every opportunity because she was his oldest child. With Sarah, he used money to replace attention.

Jessica received responsibility.

Sarah received comfort.

Both daughters interpreted the difference as preference.

Michael recognized that Sarah no longer had power inside the family. Within days, he attempted to return to Jessica.

He waited outside Henry's hotel.

"Sarah manipulated me," he said. "She knew exactly how to make you look unstable."

Jessica almost laughed.

"Yesterday you blamed me. Then you blamed Sarah. Have you ever been responsible for anything?"

"I made a mistake."

"No. You made choices for two years."

Michael said they could repair their marriage. He reminded Jessica of their first apartment and the years before money changed them.

Jessica remembered those years too.

That was what made leaving painful.

She did not pretend she had never loved him.

But love did not require her to accept humiliation.

Michael reached for her.

Jessica stepped back.

"The divorce meeting is tomorrow morning."

His voice hardened.

"You will regret destroying this family."

Jessica looked directly at him.

"You destroyed it in private. I am only refusing to hide it in public."
