He Cut Her Hair Before the Entire Base
CHAPTER 2 - THE NAME IN THE FILE
The rain had turned to a fine, needling drizzle by the time they untied Elena's wrists.
No one apologized.
A medic offered her a blanket, but she waved it away. She refused to shiver in front of Maverson.
The military police captain handed over the sealed folder with both hands. Maverson broke the seal too quickly, as if speed could control what was inside. Elena watched his eyes move across the page.
The color drained from his face.
He looked at her differently then. Not with triumph. With calculation.
"Captain Ruiz," he said, voice clipped. "You are confined to quarters until further notice."
Elena stood slowly. Wet hair clung in uneven strands around her jaw. Broken pieces still lay on the concrete at her knees like something dead.
She was escorted across the base by Sergeant Tomas Vega, an old friend of her mother's. He kept his voice low.
"What did you send in that report?"
"The truth."
He glanced around before answering. "Then you need to be careful. More careful than you've ever been."
Inside her quarters, he set down a paper bag. Civilian soap, gauze, coffee packets. Small kindnesses mattered most in places built to erase them.
Tomas hesitated at the door. "Your mother trusted very few people before she died."
Elena went still.
Her mother, Captain Isabel Ruiz, had been declared a suicide eleven years earlier after a training accident inquiry she had refused to close. Elena had been twenty-two and too broken to question the official story.
Tomas pulled an envelope from inside his jacket.
"I was told to give you this only if they came for you in public."
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was an old photograph. Her mother, younger and smiling, stood beside two people in uniform. One was a teenage Elena.
The other was Colonel Maverson.
On the back, in her mother's handwriting, were six words:
If he punishes her, open locker 214.
Elena looked up sharply. "Why would my mother write that?"
Tomas swallowed. "Because she knew someday you'd find what she couldn't prove."
Then the base loudspeaker cracked to life.
"Captain Elena Ruiz to headquarters. Immediately. Armed escort authorized."
