He Cut Her Hair Before the Entire Base

CHAPTER 3 - LOCKER 214

Headquarters could wait.

For the first time since the charges were filed, Elena made a choice for herself, not for survival.

"Tomas," she said, already pulling on dry fatigues, "where is locker 214?"

His expression said this was a terrible idea.

That was answer enough.

The old supply wing had been closed for years after mold spread through the lower level. The corridor smelled like wet paper and rust. Elena's boots echoed on the concrete as Tomas led her down a row of dented metal lockers.

214 was near the end.

The padlock was ancient.

Tomas handed her a wrench. "If anyone asks, I was never here."

Inside the locker sat a canvas satchel, a field journal, and a small cassette recorder wrapped in oilcloth. Elena stared at it, suddenly back in her mother's apartment at age ten, listening to Isabel label training tapes at the kitchen table.

The same neat handwriting marked this one:

For Elena. Only if necessary.

Her throat closed.

They found an old player in the maintenance office. The tape hissed, then Isabel's voice filled the room, calm and steady.

"If you're hearing this, Maverson was protected longer than I hoped."

Elena shut her eyes.

Her mother spoke of falsified readiness reports and expired blood products relabeled for field use. She named two medics, one contractor, and finally Colonel Adrian Maverson, who had approved every transfer in exchange for kickbacks routed through a veterans charity.

Then came the part that changed everything.

"I confronted him after Corporal Daniel Ruiz collapsed in training. Daniel was not Elena's cousin, as the records say. He was her father. Maverson knew. He altered the file to bury both the supply theft and our relationship."

Elena gripped the table so hard her knuckles whitened.

Her father.

Not dead in a road accident before she was born, as she'd been told.

Dead on a training field because someone had sent damaged supplies and forged reports.

Then footsteps pounded outside.

Tomas looked through the cracked office door and muttered a curse. "Military police."

Elena slipped the cassette into her pocket.

But before they could move, the office door opened.

It wasn't the police.

It was Major Lucia Serrano, the base legal officer.

And she said, "If you want to bring Maverson down, stop running. I know where your original report is."
