The Boy Who Found His Grandfather Behind The Family Portrait

Chapter 1 - Behind The Portrait
The hammer hit the family portrait with a dull, violent thud.
Daniel Whitmore rushed across the mansion study just as his seven-year-old son raised it again.
“Leo, stop!”
He grabbed the boy’s arm before the second strike landed.
Leo twisted desperately in his father’s grip.
“Grandpa’s in there!”
Daniel froze.
Behind him, his wife, Vivian, stepped forward too quickly.
“Are you out of your mind?” she snapped.
Leo pointed at the torn canvas.
“I heard him!”
Daniel’s anger weakened.
The study went silent except for the low pulse of rain against the windows. He looked at the portrait again. It had hung there for years: his grandfather, his father, himself, all painted like men who never made mistakes.
Leo grabbed the torn edge and pulled.
The canvas ripped down the middle.
Behind it was a pair of dark wooden doors.
Daniel stepped toward them.
Vivian caught his wrist.
“Don’t open it.”
He looked down at her hand.
Then slowly up at her face.
Her lips were pressed tight, her eyes shining with fear.
Daniel pulled free.
He pushed the doors open.
Cold air breathed out from the darkness.
Inside, an old man in pale blue pajamas sat tied to a chair. Silver tape covered his mouth. His hands were cuffed in front of him.
Daniel’s body went numb.
“Dad?”
The old man opened his eyes.
And behind Daniel, Vivian stopped breathing.
