The Boy Who Found His Grandfather Behind The Family Portrait

Chapter 2 - The Dead Man In The Wall

For twelve years, Daniel had believed his father was dead.

Edward Whitmore’s funeral had been one of the biggest events the city had ever seen. Closed casket. Black cars. White roses. Business leaders crying carefully for cameras. Vivian, then Daniel’s fiancée, had held his hand through it all, whispering that grief made men weak and that he had to be strong for the company.

Now Edward was sitting in a hidden room behind the family portrait.

Alive.

Starved.

Drugged.

Daniel tore the tape from his father’s mouth with shaking hands.

Edward coughed violently, then whispered, “Leo heard me?”

The boy rushed forward, crying.

“I told Dad! I told him!”

Edward’s eyes filled with tears.

“You brave little lion.”

Daniel turned toward Vivian.

“What is this?”

Vivian stepped backward.

“I can explain.”

Daniel stood.

“No. You can’t.”

She raised both hands.

“Your father was sick. Dangerous. He was confused. Your mother made the decision before she died.”

“My mother died eight years before him.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

That mistake cost her everything.

Daniel looked at Leo.

“Go downstairs. Find Marta. Tell her to call my security team and the police.”

Vivian moved toward the door.

“Leo, don’t.”

Daniel’s voice cut through the room.

“Do not speak to my son.”

Leo ran.

Vivian’s beautiful mask cracked.

“Daniel, listen to me. If the police come, your family name will be destroyed.”

Daniel looked back at his father, whose wrists were bruised from the cuffs.

“My family name is already destroyed.”

Edward grabbed Daniel’s sleeve.

“Not just Vivian,” he whispered. “Victor.”

Daniel went still.

Victor Whitmore.

His uncle.

The man who had managed the family company after Edward’s “death.” The man who convinced Daniel to marry Vivian. The man who told him the past should stay buried.

Edward struggled to speak.

“They wanted the trust. The old will. Your son.”

Daniel’s blood turned cold.

“What about Leo?”

Edward looked toward the door.

“The portrait room was never meant to hide me forever. It was meant to hide what I knew before Leo turned eight.”
