The Boy Who Found His Grandfather Behind The Family Portrait

Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind The Smile

Vivian was brought back to the mansion in handcuffs that afternoon.

Her hair was still perfect. Her face still calm. But when she saw Edward’s empty chair being carried out from behind the portrait, something in her eyes broke.

Daniel stood in the study with the police, his lawyer’s replacement, and Marta.

“Why?” he asked.

Vivian laughed softly.

“You still ask like a child.”

Daniel said nothing.

She looked at the ruined portrait.

“Your father never respected me. He saw me as Victor’s little puppet. He said I married you for the name.”

“Did you?”

“At first.” Her smile was small and cruel. “Then I realized you were too sentimental to control anything. You would have given money to hospitals, shelters, useless people who could never repay you.”

Daniel stared at her.

“So you locked my father in a wall.”

“It was Victor’s idea.”

“But you fed him. Drugged him. Walked past him every day.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“He should have signed what we needed.”

Marta whispered, “Monster.”

Vivian turned on her.

“You servants always love dramatic words.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Tell me about Leo.”

Vivian’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What was the accident plan?”

She said nothing.

The police placed a printed message in front of her. Then another. Then a photo of the private estate where Leo’s birthday party was supposed to happen.

A balcony.

A lake.

A broken railing already prepared.

Vivian looked away.

Daniel nearly lost control.

“You were going to kill my son?”

“No!” she shouted. “Only scare him. Daniel would sign anything if Leo was hurt.”

“You planned to use my child as leverage.”

Vivian’s voice dropped.

“Your child was the key to everything.”

At the doorway, Leo stood frozen.

Daniel turned and saw him.

The boy’s face was pale.

“Dad?”

Daniel crossed the room and knelt in front of him.

Leo whispered, “Was she going to put me behind the picture too?”

Daniel pulled him into his arms.

“No. Never.”

But as he held his son, Daniel understood the worst truth.

Vivian had not become dangerous that day.

She had been living beside them like poison for years.

And Leo had been the only one brave enough to smash the frame.
