The Birthday Gift That Brought Her Mother Back

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY AT THE TERRACE

"Stay away from my daughter!"

Daniel Harper heard his own voice cut through the music before he even realized how loud he was.

The birthday party on the terrace had been soft and golden a second earlier. Fresh flowers lined the railing. A pink cake sat untouched on the table. Warm light spilled from the villa behind them.

Then he saw the boy.

Seven years old, maybe. Thin. Dirty face. Worn jacket too big at the shoulders. He had slipped past the caterers and guests and come straight toward Emily's wheelchair.

Daniel caught his wrist just as the boy reached out.

The child's shoulder tightened, but he didn't fight back. He only looked at Daniel with strange calm.

Emily, in her blue dress, lifted a hand and touched her father's arm.

"Daddy, please."

Daniel looked down at his daughter. She was studying the boy, then her own legs, with a hope he had learned to fear. Too many doctors. Too many therapies. Too many promises that ended in tears.

Slowly, Daniel let go.

The boy opened his hand again.

"Trust me," he said softly. "You can stand."

Emily swallowed. Then she placed her small hand in his.

Daniel was already moving forward to stop it when Emily pushed against the armrest. Her body shook with effort. The boy steadied her, nothing more.

And then, impossibly, she rose.

For one terrible, holy second, Daniel forgot to breathe.

Emily stood on trembling legs, her fingers clutching the boy's hand, her face bright with shock.

Daniel dropped to his knees in front of her, tears burning his eyes.

"How did you do that?"

The boy gently released Emily's hand. Then he reached into his pocket and placed a silver necklace in Daniel's palm.

Daniel's thumb flipped open the locket.

Inside was a photograph of a woman he had not seen in eight years.

Noah's mother.

Lena.

The boy looked at him and said, very quietly, "She sent me."

Emily leaned forward, stared at the picture, and gasped.

"That's Mommy!"

Daniel lifted his head and stared at the boy.

Because Lena Harper was supposed to be dead.
