The Birthday Gift That Brought Her Mother Back

CHAPTER 4 - WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

"He told me my little girl would suffer because of me."

Lena sat with both children sleeping nearby, Emily in her chair and Oliver curled in a church blanket on the couch. Night pressed softly against the shelter window.

Daniel stayed standing.

He needed the distance.

Eight years earlier, after Emily's accident left her unable to walk, Daniel had lived inside hospitals and dread. Lena had been unraveling under the weight of guilt. She had been driving the day of the crash. A truck ran a red light, but Lena never forgave herself.

"My panic attacks got bad," she said. "Your father came to the hospital when you were with Emily. He said he had spoken to specialists. He said I was making Emily worse. That if I loved her, I would disappear until she recovered."

Daniel's hands curled.

"My father hated you," he said flatly.

"I know. But I believed him because I was already ashamed."

She told him the rest. Daniel's father arranged a place for her to stay "for treatment." He controlled the phone calls. Then he told her Daniel had agreed she should stay away. By the time she realized the truth, she was broke, unstable, and too frightened to return.

Then she found out she was pregnant.

"With Oliver," Daniel said.

Lena nodded. "I tried to come back twice. I saw your father both times. He told me you had moved on. He threatened to have me committed if I came near Emily."

Daniel closed his eyes. Every memory of his father's polished kindness suddenly looked rotten.

"Why now?" he asked.

Lena looked at Oliver, sleeping with one hand over his chest.

"Because he needs surgery, and I learned the donor match they hope for might come from family." Her voice broke. "And because I am dying too."

Daniel stared at her.

"Breast cancer. Stage four."

The locket lay on the table between them, open to her younger face.

Then Emily, still half-asleep, whispered into the dark, "Daddy... is Oliver my brother?"

Daniel looked at the two children.

And for the first time, he knew the answer was yes.
