The Birthday Gift That Brought Her Mother Back

CHAPTER 5 - THE SECOND BIRTHDAY

Three months later, the terrace looked different.

Same flowers. Same warm light from inside the villa. But no one had come for a party this time.

Only family.

The kind built by truth, not blood alone.

Oliver's surgery had taken place six weeks earlier. Daniel had been tested first. Not a match. Emily too young. In the end, the match had come through the donor registry, a miracle from a stranger. Daniel stayed through every hour of the operation anyway.

Lena had started treatment, not because it promised enough, but because now there was something to stay for.

And Emily practiced standing every day.

Not by magic. Not by miracle.

By muscle, fear, stubborn hope, and the memory of a ragged little boy holding out his hand and saying, Trust me.

Tonight she stood between them for six full seconds.

Daniel counted every one.

Lena sat in a chair wrapped in a cream shawl, thinner still, but smiling as if she had borrowed light from somewhere stronger than pain. Oliver leaned against her side, pink scar showing above his collar. Emily wore the same blue dress, altered at the hem because she insisted it was lucky.

Ruth brought out a small cake.

"Whose birthday is this?" Oliver asked.

Daniel looked at the children, then at Lena.

"All of ours," he said.

Emily reached for Oliver's hand. "You gave me the best present."

Oliver frowned. "I didn't bring anything."

"Yes, you did," she said. "You brought Mommy home."

Lena began to cry quietly. Daniel took the silver locket from his pocket and placed it in her palm.

For years it had been proof of loss.

Now it was proof that someone had survived long enough to come back.

Daniel met Lena's eyes. Forgiveness was not simple. Neither was grief. But some doors opened only when pride stepped aside.

"Next year," he said, "we do this again."

Lena smiled through tears. "You really think I should plan that far?"

He took her hand.

"Yes."

Inside the house, the phone began to ring.

Daniel almost ignored it, until Ruth glanced at the screen and looked up sharply.

"It's Memorial Hospital," she said. "They have new test results for Emily's legs."
