She Fell Out of the Wall and Asked What Year It Was|The Son Between the Woman He Lost and the Mother He Trusted|Claire's Missing Years Behind the Cracked Hallway Wall

CHAPTER 1 - THE WALL OPENS

"Claire?"

The name left Daniel Mercer like something torn out of him.

One second he was standing in the great hall of his late father's house, staring at another section of cracked paneling the contractors had warned him about. The next, the wall gave way with a hard, splintering crash.

Dust burst into the air.

A woman stood inside the dark space behind it.

Her hair was tangled. Her dress hung in dirty strips. She was barefoot, one hand gripping the old wooden frame as if it were the only thing keeping her upright.

For a moment Daniel's mind refused to make sense of her face.

Then it did.

Claire Bennett.

Claire, who had vanished twelve years ago two weeks before their wedding.

Claire, whose picture had once sat in every local diner window and on every church bulletin board in town.

He moved toward her before he could think.

She blinked against the light pouring from the chandelier above, her lips trembling.

"What year is it?"

Daniel caught her arm as she swayed. She was cold. Far too cold.

"2026," he said. His voice sounded wrong, thinner than it should have. "Claire... how long have you been in here?"

She pressed her fingers to her temple, as if searching a locked room inside her own head.

"I don't remember."

Then the side door opened.

His mother stepped in.

Evelyn Mercer still carried herself with the same polished composure that had ruled this house for decades. But when she saw the broken wall, and the woman beside her son, she stopped so suddenly her hand stayed frozen on the brass handle.

Claire saw her too.

Her whole body changed.

She stumbled behind Daniel and grabbed the back of his jacket with both hands.

"Don't let her near me."

Daniel turned, instinctively putting himself between them.

For the first time in his life, he looked at his mother and felt something colder than anger.

Fear.

Evelyn's mouth parted. Her face had gone white beneath her makeup.

Then she said, very quietly, "Daniel... she was never supposed to be in that room."
