She Fell Out of the Wall and Asked What Year It Was|The Son Between the Woman He Lost and the Mother He Trusted|Claire's Missing Years Behind the Cracked Hallway Wall

CHAPTER 2 - THE MOTHER'S HOUSE

Daniel stared at his mother.

The sentence landed harder than the falling wall had.

"What does that mean?" he asked.

But Claire was shaking so badly he could feel it through his sleeve. Her nails dug into the fabric of his jacket. Whatever answer his mother might give, it could wait.

He called 911.

Within twenty minutes, the grand front hall filled with strangers, flashing lights through the tall windows, and the sharp smell of antiseptic. Claire sat wrapped in a paramedic's blanket on the edge of an antique bench, flinching every time anyone moved too fast.

She would not let Evelyn come within ten feet of her.

At the hospital, Daniel learned the first ugly facts. Claire was malnourished. Dehydrated. She had old injuries that had healed badly. Her memory was patchy, broken in pieces. The doctor said trauma could do that. So could years of isolation.

Years.

Daniel sat beside her bed long after midnight.

He remembered the spring she vanished. The police had searched the grounds, the lake, the woods behind the house. His mother had held his hand through every interview, every false lead, every funeral-like month afterward.

She had looked him in the eye and said Claire must have run away.

Now Claire lay in front of him with bruised ankles and fear in her bones.

When she woke, she turned toward him like a child waking from a nightmare.

"Daniel?"

"I'm here."

Her eyes filled. "I knew your voice. When the wall broke, I knew your voice."

He swallowed hard. "Claire, did my mother do this to you?"

She squeezed the blanket.

"I remember a tray through a little door. I remember her perfume. And I remember she told me no one was coming."

Before Daniel could answer, a nurse entered with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a tarnished silver locket found in the hidden room.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

He had given it to Claire the night he proposed.

When the nurse turned it over, a second thing slid out from behind the clasp.

A folded strip of yellowed paper.

And on the outside, in his father's handwriting, were the words: For Claire, if she is ever found.
