CHAPTER 3 - THE LETTER IN THE LOCKET

Daniel's hands shook as he opened the note.

It was short. Written in the hurried, uneven script of a man who knew he had little time.

Evelyn knows. I heard Claire in the passage again. If anything happens to me, the plans are in the blue ledger. Trust Helen Price.

His father had died of a heart attack eleven years ago.

Daniel had mourned him. Buried him. Defended him.

Now he read the letter three times and still could not fully breathe.

Claire watched his face. "What is it?"

He sat on the edge of the hospital chair and read it aloud.

At the name Helen Price, Claire frowned. "Helen... the housekeeper?"

"She left not long after my father died."

Claire closed her eyes. "No. She was kind to me. She slipped extra water under the panel once. She whispered that she was sorry."

Daniel stood at once.

By morning he found Helen in a retirement cottage thirty miles away. She opened the door with a cane in one hand and fear in her eyes before he even spoke.

"I knew someday you'd come," she said.

Helen had worked for the Mercers for twenty-four years. She looked older than Daniel remembered, but her voice stayed steady as she led him into a small kitchen.

She told him there had always been old service passages inside the house, built a century earlier. Most were sealed. One remained hidden behind the decorative wall in the hall.

"Your mother found Claire there after an accident," Helen said. "Claire had fallen down the back stairs during an argument. Hit her head badly. She was confused, frightened. Your mother said if the police saw her like that, they'd think your father had done it. She said the scandal would kill him."

Daniel stared at her.

"So she hid her?"

Helen's eyes filled with shame. "At first she said it would be one night. Then one week. Then it became something no one knew how to undo."

"No one?"

Helen rose with effort and opened a drawer. Inside was a blue ledger.

"I tried to go to the police," she whispered. "Your father stopped me. He said he would handle it. Then he died before he did."

Daniel took the ledger.

Tucked inside was a page ripped from Claire's old journal.

The last line was written in a jagged hand:

Evelyn says Daniel already chose another woman.
