He Backed Toward Her Father and Never Hit the Brakes

CHAPTER 1 - THE BOY WHO RAN
"What the hell are you doing? You'd killed my dad!"
One second she was placing grocery bags into the trunk. The next, a small blond boy came flying across the parking lot and grabbed the handles of Frank's wheelchair with both hands.
Lena dropped a bag and ran.
She caught the boy by the arm just as a black SUV reversed behind them.
Then metal screamed.
The SUV slammed into the empty shopping cart that had been standing exactly where Frank's wheelchair had been.
The cart twisted and skidded away like a broken toy.
Lena's hand fell from the boy's arm.
For a moment she could hear only her father's ragged breathing and the spinning rattle of the damaged cart's wheel.
She crouched beside Frank. "Dad? Dad, are you hurt?"
Frank shook his head, still staring at the bent metal.
The boy didn't look at either of them. He kept his eyes fixed on the SUV. His small chest rose and fell too fast. Then he lifted a trembling hand and pointed at the driver.
"He saw us," the boy said. "He didn't stop."
Lena followed his finger.
The window was down. A man in his late forties sat behind the wheel, one hand locked around it, his face drained of color as he looked back at the cart.
Then his eyes met hers.
His mouth parted.
Lena felt the blood leave her own face.
She stood and moved in front of her father's wheelchair without thinking.
"That's my husband," she whispered.
Frank looked up at her so sharply it seemed to hurt him.
And in the back seat of the SUV, a little girl pressed both palms against the window and mouthed one word Lena had not heard in two years.
"Mom."
