He Backed Toward Her Father and Never Hit the Brakes
CHAPTER 4 - FRANK'S OLD ENVELOPE
"I thought I was protecting you by staying quiet."
Frank did not speak until Graham arrived an hour later with Ruby asleep in the back seat.
Lena made him stay in the living room while she settled the child on the couch with a blanket. Ruby curled up at once, one small hand under her cheek. The sight softened Lena in spite of herself, and she hated that softening almost as much as the fear.
When she returned to the kitchen, Frank had an old manila envelope in front of him.
Lena recognized it instantly.
He had kept it in the drawer beneath the phone for years and always brushed off her questions.
Frank touched the envelope but did not open it.
"Thirty years ago," he said, "I worked maintenance for a nursing home. A resident named Helen Mercer gave birth there in secret. The baby was taken away through a private arrangement. Money changed hands."
Graham stared. "Mercer was my mother's maiden name."
Frank nodded once.
Lena sat down slowly.
"Helen begged me to mail proof to her sister if anything happened to her," Frank said. "I was young. Scared. The administrator said I'd lose my job. I kept the papers instead."
He slid out copies of old records. A birth form. A payment ledger. One letter, never mailed.
Graham looked like the air had been punched out of him. "My half sister..."
"Was the child taken from Helen," Frank said. "And the people who arranged it were connected to your father."
Lena thought of Ruby asleep in the other room. A child passed around by the damage of old secrets.
"So someone learned you had this," she said to Frank. "And told Graham you were a threat."
Frank lowered his eyes. "I asked to meet him today. I wanted to tell him the truth. Before I could, he pulled in. Then he got a call. He looked upset. Distracted."
Graham's face tightened. "The brakes slipped when I hit reverse. I swear to you I tried to stop."
Lena wanted to believe him.
Then Owen's words came back.
He saw us. He didn't stop.
At that exact moment, a knock sounded at the front door.
When Lena opened it, the cashier from the store stood there with little Owen beside her.
Owen held up a cracked cell phone.
"My brother found this near where the SUV was parked yesterday," he said. "It has videos on it."
