He Backed Toward Her Father and Never Hit the Brakes
CHAPTER 3 - THE THINGS HE NEVER SAID
Lena refused to ride home with Graham.
Instead, she pushed Frank's wheelchair to her car while her hands still shook, and the whole time she could feel Graham's eyes on her back. Ruby stood beside him, confused and silent.
At home, Frank insisted on sitting at the kitchen table though he looked pale.
"Call the police," he said.
Lena poured him water, then sat down without touching her own glass. "And say what? That my husband almost hit you? He'll say it was an accident."
Frank leaned forward. "Was it?"
She didn't answer.
Because the truth was uglier than certainty. For months, Graham had been distant. Too many late nights. Too many unfinished explanations. Yet he had still driven Frank to appointments when Lena was working. He had still brought groceries. He had still remembered exactly how Frank liked his coffee.
None of that fit with the image of him gripping that steering wheel and not stopping.
Her phone rang at six.
Graham.
She almost let it ring out. Then she answered.
"We need to talk," he said.
"You should have talked before you showed up with a child."
A long silence.
"Ruby is my niece," he said at last. "My sister's daughter."
Lena stood so quickly her chair scraped the floor. "You don't have a sister."
"I do," he said quietly. "Half sister. We were separated when I was a kid. I found her last year."
Lena gripped the counter. "Last year."
"She died three weeks ago."
The anger inside her faltered, only for a second.
Graham kept going. "Ruby has no one else. I've been trying to get temporary guardianship. I didn't tell you because... because my sister hated our father. She wanted nothing to do with the life I built. I thought I had time to explain."
Frank, listening from the table, said coldly, "That still doesn't explain the parking lot."
"No," Graham said. "It doesn't."
Then his voice changed.
"And there's something else. I wasn't there by accident. Someone called me this morning and told me Frank had evidence that could destroy my family."
Lena's stomach dropped. "What evidence?"
Frank looked just as startled as she felt.
Then her father went white.
