His Wife Buried Their Daughter Alive
PART 1 — The Voice in the Rain
The first person to say my daughter was alive was a barefoot boy covered in mud.
"Stop! Don't bury her!"
His scream tore through the cemetery.
Two security guards seized him before he reached the coffin. I charged forward, grief exploding into rage.
"Get your hands off her! What is wrong with you?"
The boy fought against them, rain streaming down his face.
Then he pointed at my wife.
"Ask her! She drugged your daughter!"
Every mourner turned toward Victoria.
She stood beneath a black umbrella, clutching her pearls. Fear flashed across her face before she replaced it with wounded disbelief.
"My wife would never hurt Emma," I snapped.
The boy stopped struggling.
"Sir, look me in the eyes."
I did.
There was no madness in them. No hunger for attention.
Only terror.
"The little girl is alive."
Something inside me shifted.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Daniel, he's disturbed. Let them remove him."
But her voice trembled.
I looked at the white coffin, then at the fresh grave waiting beside it.
"Open the coffin."
Victoria grabbed my arm.
"No! The doctor warned us her condition might be contagious."
Emma had died from heart failure.
Heart failure wasn't contagious.
I tore myself free.
"OPEN IT NOW!"
The funeral workers lifted the lid.
Emma lay beneath a white satin blanket, her face pale and still.
For one terrible second, I believed I had allowed a stranger to desecrate her funeral.
Then the muddy boy leaned toward the coffin.
"Watch her necklace."
The tiny silver heart resting on Emma's chest moved.
Up.
Down.
Up again.
Dr. Bennett, one of the mourners, pushed through the crowd and pressed two fingers against Emma's neck.
His face went white.
"Call an ambulance!"
Victoria backed away.
Dr. Bennett lifted Emma into his arms.
"She has a pulse."
Then he looked at me and whispered, "Your daughter didn't die, Daniel. Someone made her look dead."
